By 1847, William was in business as a Bank Agent in Senhouse Street, Maryport. By 1869 he had been appointed as a director of the Maryport and Carlisle Railway; he was appointed chairman a short time before his death. He was a shareholder in the Cumberland Union Banking Company and had many other business interests. When probate was granted for his will in 1876, his personal estate was valued at £60,000.
